A prerequisite for the successful integration of implants is a positive reaction with the surrounding tissue. In practice, surface roughness in the micrometer range has proven to be very promising. This study investigates the influence of surface structures in the nanometer range in vitro and in vivo, starting from titanium, one of the most common implant materials. The anodic generation and optimization of TiO2 nanotube layers of varying diameters with high lateral resolution in the range of 15 to 100 nm is fundamentally described. The results clearly show that nanoscale surface structures in the range of 15-100 nm have a dominant influence on the adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and migration of cells. Among others, mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and endothelial cells were studied.
