Selbstbetrachtungen

Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher on the Roman imperial throne, reflected in his Meditations on his role models and life principles: reasoned action, modesty, justice, and humanity, self-discipline, and inner calm. He continually reassured himself of his place in the world and sought to break behavioral patterns through the power of his thoughts. In doing so, he created timeless maxims for a mindful life.

The Meditations are a central work of Stoicism and are essential in both philosophy and Greek studies. Gernot Krapinger, who teaches at the Institute of Classical Philology in Graz, has supplemented his new translation with the original Greek text: a valuable addition for study and teaching. The detailed explanations highlight traditions in ancient philosophy as well as cross-references. Additionally, terms and the mentioned individuals are explained, and there is a family tree and an afterword about the author, along with the context of the work's creation and its influence.
