The "Expert Knowledge for Gardeners" has been the standard work for horticultural vocational school education for over 25 years. The 12th edition of the work has been extensively revised. All content has been reviewed and updated to the latest standards. New topics added include: algae as a raw material (botany), approval of plant protection products (plant protection), measures against frost (weather and climate science), production lines and pricking machines (cultural and work processes), hydrogen as an energy carrier and storage (technology), as well as climate diagrams (technical calculations).

The layout of the chapters has been modernized for the 12th edition, and the guidance for readers has been optimized. Following each learning unit, there are tasks of varying difficulty, which are categorized in the 12th edition as easy, medium, and hard. Educators can thus more easily tailor the selection of tasks to the level of the target audience, and learners can better assess their own knowledge level.

The expert knowledge now also includes videos that can be used, for example, as an introduction to lessons, to clarify practical activities, for the flipped classroom method, or for independent learning. All videos have been selected with a focus on technical accuracy and the needs of the learners.

The textbook contains the complete theoretical knowledge necessary for a solid foundational education in horticulture and has been prepared in a hands-on and practical manner for trainees in their first and second years of training. It is characterized by a logical and clear structure of the learning content, as well as numerous explanatory drawings and illustrations. A comprehensive glossary also makes the book a reference work that can be used beyond the training period. The work is divided into chapters on botany, soil science, plant nutrition, plant protection, weather and climate science, as well as cultural and work processes.
