Among the central themes of his main work, the "Summa de bono," Philipp the Chancellor developed a doctrine of moral action. The corresponding passages on the rational soul, freedom, and conscience are presented for the first time in German translation in this volume. They demonstrate that Philipp complements the terminology derived from Augustine and John of Damascus through a reading of Aristotle. With his stylistically influential work, he becomes an indispensable reference point for the ethics of the 13th century, as seen, for example, in Thomas Aquinas.
