During the times of change in the former GDR, the author was part of the last class to begin their training as a ship mechanic on the training ship 'Georg Büchner' in Rostock in 1990. To become a ship mechanic, the trainees naturally had to go to sea on the merchant ships of the German shipping company Rostock.
