Product details

Simone Weil, the great French philosopher, was almost forgotten in France and hardly known in Germany when she died in 1943. Her early thinking, shaped by her political engagement as a trade unionist, critic of Marx, and participant in the Spanish Civil War, later gave way to an orientation towards Christian mysticism and Platonic as well as Buddhist traditions. Shortly before her death, she entrusted her notebooks and letters to the Christian philosopher Gustave Thibon, who compiled them into the volume "Gravity and Grace" four years later. At the beginning of World War II, as Simone Weil's health deteriorated and her social activism gave way to spiritual self-reflection, the aphorisms and philosophical and mystical reflections preserved here became one of the most influential sources of later French philosophy. With this newly edited edition by Charlotte Bohn, which includes a foreword by Frank Witzel, Simone Weil's most important work is once again made accessible after many years.
