The long-planned extensive reform of the system of criminal sanctions in Swiss adult criminal law is set to finally come into effect on January 1, 2007. Over the more than 23 years since the preliminary work began, it has been subjected to various criminal policy trends and has undergone significant changes during parliamentary discussions, with corrections made to the already adopted text until the very end. This makes a comprehensive presentation of the new law particularly desirable, as is offered here in the form of a thorough revision of the first edition of this book, which has been repeatedly postponed in anticipation of the completion of the revision. It aims to provide an understanding of the future regulation not only in light of its history and its intra-systematic context but also to clarify how it maintains continuity with the existing law or presents itself as an innovation.
