The artists' book is an icon and cult object in the history of art and libraries. Based on one of the most comprehensive collections of artists' books in Switzerland, the Swiss National Library, this publication uses 112 interviews to show the Swiss "artists' book" in an international context. Some 1500 titles are listed, covering the development and significance of the phenomenon in Switzerland over a period of time from early medieval illuminated codices, or cave paintings dating back 30,000 years, through ephemera to the current fanzine.
