Product details

For a long time, there has been a need to compile information from various archives regarding the archaeological sites in the immediate vicinity of the Vicus of Turicum/Zurich. The discussion excludes the areas of the Vicus itself, which is located in today's district 1. The outer boundary is defined by the current city expansion - a fluid transition during Roman times. In this study, 100 archaeological sites within the present city area of Zurich have been compiled. Individual objects gain further significance primarily in connection with other finds or discoveries. This is particularly evident in the case of Allenmoos/Högerli in Oerlikon, where several individual finds are documented in the vicinity of the proposed building. For overarching questions such as road layouts, distribution patterns, etc., the building remains must be considered. As always, only small portions of these buildings are known - complicating matters in our case is the fact that a large part of these sites is only known through reports from the 19th century. The Roman sanctuary on the Grosser Hafner in Lake Zurich and the structures on the Üetliberg summit, which were likely used differently over time, represent individual cases. Both are closely connected to the Vicus and are thus conceptually separate from the settlement of the surrounding area. The remaining buildings known in the next vicinity of the Vicus are almost exclusively residential buildings, which can be classified as representative due to their features such as hypocaust heating systems, mosaics, wall paintings, and the like. The best-studied buildings are located in Strickhof/Mur in Oberstrass and Altstetten/Loogarten. In Albisrieden/Freibad Letzigraben, Wipkingen/Waid, and Affoltern/Althoos, elaborately designed residential buildings with heated rooms, wall paintings, and mortar floors have been documented.
