The concept of free movement is related to the concept of Union citizenship, which was introduced into European law with the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Union citizenship complements national citizenship but does not replace it. Its significance lies in the fact that it enshrines additional rights in Union law. This dissertation analyzes a complex topic by first examining Union citizenship and the associated free movement, as well as the prohibition of discrimination, and then addressing the Free Movement Agreement between Switzerland and the EU and its impact on the legal status of EU citizens in Switzerland.
