Chronic school absenteeism often leads to long-term consequences: For the student, a failed education can become a lifelong burden, while for society, unqualified job seekers pose an economic problem. School absence is often preceded by behavioral issues at school or bullying. Both can only be addressed through effective collaboration between the home and the school, potentially supported by school social work, school psychological services, child and adolescent psychiatry, youth welfare services, the police, and pediatricians. This also applies to cases where long absences occur due to psychosomatic complaints. Successful intervention requires that the involved supporters coordinate their activities. Wilhelm Rotthaus provides an overview of the entire problem area and describes the various relational and influence levels that play a role here. Each participant is offered suggestions for their work in their position and field of activity from a systemic therapeutic perspective.
