Michael Haller, born in 1945, studied philosophy, political science, and social sciences at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Basel. He earned his doctorate on Hegel's political philosophy and researched the role of media in Western democracies. Before his appointment to the University of Leipzig in 1993, Haller worked for 25 years as a reporter and senior editor in various press media in the German-speaking world. Until his retirement in the fall of 2010, he held the chair for general and specialized journalism. Today, he is the scientific director of the non-profit European Institute for Journalism and Communication Research in Leipzig. His research areas include deliberative theories of public communication in democracies, the investigation and mediation of information and media competence for the mediated world, and issues of media and communication ethics.
Hans-Peter Waldrich, born in 1944, studied political science, philosophy, geography, and German studies at the universities of Munich, Frankfurt am Main, and Freiburg im Breisgau. He earned his doctorate on the understanding of democracy in Marxism-Leninism in the German Democratic Republic. Professionally, he worked in educational institutions (Evangelische Akademie, high schools) and as a lecturer at the Federal Office for Civilian Service and the University of Karlsruhe, as well as a research associate at the University of Education. From 2008 to 2012, he was active as the state chairman of the Aktion Humane Schule Baden-Württemberg in the field of reform pedagogy. A focus of his work is the questions and problems of nuclear armament. He considers himself a peace activist and has numerous book publications.
