The image of the Rhine is primarily characterized in the Middle Rhine Valley by charming landscapes, sturdy castles, and idyllic villages. However, beyond the romantic notions, the Rhine has also been an important trade route for centuries, shaped by a thriving inland shipping industry. Gerd Schuth, a native of Koblenz and a long-time journalist for the Rhein-Zeitung, has been focusing on pushboat shipping for decades. From his own collection and the archives of enthusiastic shipping enthusiasts, he has selected over 220 mostly unpublished images for this picture book. Expertly commented, they showcase the development of pushboat shipping between Bingen and Koblenz since the 1950s. Impressive, often colorful photographs of the Rhine bulls with up to 6,000 horsepower against the backdrop of towns and landscapes convey a vivid picture of this unique subject.
