Access to written language has been a central task of schools for as long as there have been institutionalised forms of education. Writing and reading are an indispensable resource for personal education and emancipation, but also for social empowerment and professional qualification, which should be developed as far as possible in all children according to their individual learning prerequisites. The acquisition of written language in primary school includes basic reading skills as well as spelling and insights into the functions of written language. The book explains important developmental steps in learning to read and (spell) write at pre-school and primary school age and also includes multilingual children. The best way for children to learn to read and write is still the subject of controversy today, which is reflected in the different methods used to organise initial teaching. The author looks at and discusses the different didactic approaches in early years teaching.
