The international Lake Constance Yearbook brings together current research and information on the history and natural history of the entire Lake Constance region.
In view of the 1300th anniversary of the founding of Reichenau Monastery, this volume opens with an interdisciplinary essay on Schopflen Castle, which once secured access to the island. Today's ruins are examined from the perspective of medieval studies, archaeology and building research. Two interlinked articles are dedicated to the wealthy, late medieval Constance merchant Lütfried Muntprat II and the history of houses in the old town. Thurgau is represented with an article on the noble von Helmsdorf family and a surviving psalter, while the history of St. Gallen under Prince-Abbot Bernhard Müller in the early 17th century is discussed. There is also fascinating information about a reorganisation plan from the Napoleonic era: the projected canton of Säntis during the Helvetic period. Two articles on contemporary history, one on the smuggling of explosives on Lake Constance towards Vorarlberg in 1934 and the other on a British air raid on Liggeringen in June 1943, conclude this richly illustrated and extremely informative volume.
