While Munich was a center of the women's movement around 1900 and a creative melting pot for female writers, the trail of women writers seems to fade after 1945. However, this image is misleading: from Dagmar Nick to Doris Dörrie – they certainly existed and continue to do so. While at the turn of the century, women gathered in salons and cafés to write against the patriarchal order, the female literary scene from the 1950s onwards was composed of lone fighters who were only loosely connected and hardly knew each other. This book focuses on a quartet of women writers: Oda Schaefer, Gisela Elsner, Luise Rinser, and Asta Scheib, who lived and worked in the state capital. Additionally, other internationally renowned authors, such as the esteemed Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, have also made their mark in Munich. Their voices will be featured in this portrait series, documenting the diversity of women's writing after 1945.
