Schlump

The Rediscovery: a forgotten classic, a magnificent anti-war novel from 1928. It all began with the book of burned books, in which Volker Weidermann honored all authors whose works fell victim to the book burnings in 2008, including Schlump. Dr. Christa Grimm came forward and revealed the secret of authorship: Hans Herbert Grimm, her father-in-law, had written the novel about World War I, which still reads as fresh and relevant today, setting it apart from many canonized literary works. The stories and adventures from the life of the unknown musketeer Emil Schulz, known as Schlump, told by himself, illustrate the journey of an innocent young hero from the staging area to the battlefield, to the hospital, and back. They also tell the story of a modern Hans in Luck.
