The family environment of schizophrenia patients can significantly influence the course of the illness. Based on findings from 'Expressed Emotion' research, this study systematically observed and evaluated the interaction patterns in families with a schizophrenic member and in control families using sequence analysis. A comparison with the attitudes expressed by relatives in interviews revealed that constructive problem-solving processes, rather than mutual criticism, characterize the emotional climate in families of patients with a favorable course; in contrast, families of patients with a higher risk of relapse experience prolonged, negatively escalating interaction cycles. Therefore, in relapse prevention, it is particularly important to prevent negatively escalating interactions that involve both patients and relatives, and to support communication forms that focus on mutual acceptance and the joint resolution of currently arising problems.
