Swiss artist and theorist Hannes Rickli (*1959) has been exploring audiovisual material from the scientific context since 1991. The video images and sounds from behavioral research on insects and fish provide extensive insights into scientific experimental systems: Rickli's artistic reflections reveal that the establishment of scientific facts does not follow predetermined plans, but arises from the physical resistance between human, technical, and animal actors. This comprehensive book reflects on the video material detached from the laboratory context from the perspectives of sociology and history of science, art and media theory, and image and film studies, and presents the results alongside descriptions of laboratory experiments and hundreds of illustrations.
