Serge Stauffer: Art as research

This book provides the first comprehensive examination of the work and estate of the significant Swiss artist, art mediator, and Duchamp specialist Serge Stauffer (1929-1989). Stauffer, who simultaneously served as a theorist, performer, author, translator, and archivist, was a visionary figure. His work reflects humor and seriousness, precision and a boundary-breaking perspective. He was in contact with Marcel Duchamp, on whom he conducted research and published multiple times, and he maintained a lifelong friendship with André Thomkins. In the late 1960s, Stauffer worked on a utopian concept that grants the artist a new role as a researcher within society. In his essay "Art as Research" (1976/77), he outlined a (also feminist!) vision that he sought to realize at the free art school F+F, which he co-founded.
