On municipal territory

"On Community Territory" is a visual story of spatial and settlement development in Switzerland since 1945. It showcases two examples through 230 photographs accompanied by supplementary essays: Schlieren - a typical Zurich suburb that evolved from a farming village into an industrial city - and the Upper Engadin around St. Moritz, the world-renowned tourist destination in the Graubünden Alps. The book draws from a collection of images that has never been explored before: 4,000 documentary photographs from the archives of construction companies, municipal offices, amateur photographers, postcard publishers, local newspapers, and cultural archives, which the authors systematically reviewed in a research project at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK (Institute for Contemporary Arts IFCAR). For this volume, they have compiled two series of images that run chronologically through the book: always in the upper half of the pages.
