Dada Africa

The fact that the Dada movement aimed to invigorate non-European forms of expression has been little noted by art historians and art connoisseurs so far. Form, material, sound, and movement were understood by the Dadaists as equally valid cultural expressions. "Dada Africa" is presented in conjunction with exhibitions at the Rietberg Museum in Zurich and the Berlinische Galerie, and it examines for the first time the engagement of the Dada movement with non-European art and culture. Richly illustrated essays by international authors elucidate the artistic and cultural contexts of non-European artifacts in relation to Dadaist positions from an ethnological and art historical perspective. The collection of the Rietberg Museum also includes an extensive collection of African art from the estate of Han Cor.
