Product details

Salvador Dalí is considered the quintessential surrealist, while Hans Arp is regarded as a pioneer of modern abstraction. The two artists first met in 1929 within the circle of Parisian surrealists and participated together in numerous exhibitions and publications in the following years. The exhibition "Salvador Dalí and Hans Arp: The Birth of Memory" highlights unknown aspects of both artists' works and for the first time examines the historical and artistic parallels in their creations. For example, the object language of Arp's reliefs and his poetry show similarities to the inventory of surrealist paintings with which Dalí was developing his typical style at that time. Both Arp and Dalí work with the design principles of metamorphosis and transformation, freely and humorously combining human, nature, and the world of objects into fantastic beings. During this period, they also develop their own distinct characteristic languages of form. While Dalí dedicates himself to the veristic representation of inner states, Arp advances abstract surrealism and becomes a pioneer of modern sculpture. The catalog for the exhibition provides insights into the development of both artists under the influence of surrealism, featuring contributions from Dawn Adès, Astrid von Asten, Karl Böhmer, Oliver Kornhoff, Heinz-Joachim Kummer, and Sarah-Lena Schuster.
