What a landscape! No wonder that for over two hundred years it has attracted artists and writers as well as stimulating the fabulous art of its inhabitants. Numerous tales have grown up around the bizarre rocks of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, but the settings are not only in the Saxon Switzerland National Park; they stretch from Pirna to Sebnitz, from Stolpen to Glashütte, from the Valtenberg to the Zschirnstein. From the wealth of tradition, around one hundred and fifty texts are presented here. They tell of witches and sorcerers, of the dead or haunted, of water spirits or of treasures, to name just a few examples from the wide range of topics. Even the mountain spirit Rübezahl is said to have once come over from the Giant Mountains.
