The Stuttgart theologian Gustav Schwab (1792 - 1850) became widely known beyond the confines of his Swabian homeland through his book of the most beautiful stories and legends and through "Legends of Classical Antiquity." He was a patron and supporter of young poets and was connected with Chamisso, Uhland, Kerner, as well as Goethe and Tieck. The outstanding aspect of his collection lies in his ability to weave the entire ancient mythology and legendary world into a cohesive whole. Schwab gathered various sources and succeeded in creating a rounded and memorable presentation from materials of different origins, which is unique in this regard. Schwab's collection of Greek legends has enriched knowledge of Greek mythology since its first publication and has significantly shaped our image of antiquity.
