Keller's volumes of poetry encompass a highly diverse range of poems, both in terms of content and form: nature poems, love poems, epic narrative poems, philosophical reflective poems, political agitation poems, patriotic occasional poems, and also a major satire, namely "The Apothecary of Chamounix." This diversity is intentional, but it is only one aspect of Keller's lyricism. The materially and formally varied poems are interconnected within the three collections from 1846, 1854, and 1888; they are integrated into a cohesive body of work. Recurring motifs and themes weave through Keller's cycles like a tapestry; in the subtly intertwined arrangement by groups, sections, and cycles, the individual artworks form structures of the highest complexity. Therefore, a reader who wishes to derive more than five or six "air tones" from Keller's lyricism must adjust their approach to lyrical poetry.
