Matthew López, born in Panama City, Florida, studied theater and performance arts at the University of Southern Florida. His debut play, The Whipping Man, earned him multiple awards. His works have been developed and performed at the McCarter Theatre, The New Group, Penumbra Theatre Company, Ars Nova, and The Lark Play Development Center. For his 300-page magnum opus, The Inheritance, which premiered at the Young Vic in London directed by Stephen Daldry, he won several awards including the Drama Desk Award and the Tony Award for "Best Play." López worked as a staff writer for the successful HBO series The Newsroom by Aaron Sorkin. In 2023, López made his directorial debut with Red, White and Royal Blue, based on the novel by Casey McQuiston, which topped the Amazon Prime charts for several weeks.
