Christoph Schlepphorst develops a rational ligand design for the ruthenium-NHC-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of (hetero-)aromatic compounds. Additionally, he synthesizes a series of corresponding carbene precursors and characterizes them. The synthesized carbene precursors are also tested for their suitability as ligands in Ru-NHC-catalyzed hydrogenation reactions. In this process, the author optimizes the asymmetric hydrogenation of unprotected monosubstituted pyrazines with respect to the reaction conditions and achieves enantiomeric ratios of up to 91:9 with one of the new ligands.
