The so-called Silver Age is one of the most amazing periods in Russian literature, as diverse as the poets who gave it their voice. It is more than a literary affair: an existential event that survived even the Soviet winter, even though many of the poets honored here paid for it with their lives. Fritz Mierau does not limit his artful account to the first decades of the 20th century, but sees that period in a much larger context, ranging from Pushkin to Pasternak. He knows how to sketch in a few precise strokes an entire destiny in which personality and poetry form a well-differentiated but inseparable unity.
