Nikoletta Kiss evocatively tells the story of an intense friendship between women and a love triangle set against the turmoil of the pre-revolutionary period—of old wounds and the realization that it is never too late for healing. Márta grows up in socialist Budapest, by Lake Balaton, where she spends wonderful summers with her cousin Theresa. But without Theresa, life feels lonely, and after graduating from school, Márta escapes her alcoholic father and travels to East Berlin to be with her. Her friend introduces her to the world of the artistic bohemia, to backroom apartments and smoky pubs, and to a reading by the young, regime-critical writer Konstantin. He is stunning, enigmatic, and tormented. Both women fall in love with him, and naturally, the extroverted and self-assured Theresa is the lucky one—until she is arrested due to a fateful circumstance. A dangerous closeness develops between the remaining friends, and a sense of betrayal hangs in the air, which will haunt Márta for decades to come. But were they not all equally innocent back then? And will she ever manage to step out of Theresa's shadow?.
