Product details
The painter Rudolf Levy (1875-1944) was a central figure of the Munich and Paris avant-garde and celebrated great successes in 1920s Berlin with his vibrant portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, including in the legendary Flechtheim Gallery. The rise of the National Socialists abruptly ended his career. After an odyssey of escape, Levy was finally able to settle in Florence, where his work reached a final impressive peak until his deportation and murder in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
As the first German exhibition house, the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern now dedicates a retrospective to the work and life of Rudolf Levy. The catalog offers insights into an artist of European stature, whose rich visual world is continually rediscovered. Contributions from renowned authors illuminate Levy's fate as a persecuted artist and Jew, the artistic kaleidoscope of his time, the years in Florentine exile, as well as the reception and re-canonization of his art in the young Federal Republic.
This is a rediscovery of a major classic of modernity on the occasion of the first retrospective in Germany - an international cooperation project with the Uffizi in Florence. A standard work on Rudolf Levy in the German language, featuring a contemporary art and word contribution by Edmund de Waal. Exhibition at the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, October 28, 2023, to February 11, 2024 (under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier).
