This volume is the first complete collection of Klaus Mann's stories from exile, many of which have been previously unpublished. The stories, written between 1933 and 1943, focus on outsiders and outcasts, the lonely and the suicidal. They reflect the misery of life in emigration. In the title story 'Speed', experiences with the artificial paradises of drugs are described. The volume also includes Klaus Mann's famous novella about the death of the Bavarian King Ludwig II, 'The Grated Window'.
