A fascinating historical theme: Leprosy - a terrible scourge over the centuries. A thousand steps from the city: Here in the Freiburg leper house live the lepers - they are considered living dead. The baker Kannegiesser has just been symbolically laid to rest. He believes he is healthy and asks Beguine Serafina for help. Serafina wants to involve the wound doctor Achaz, but during the night, Achaz is attacked and seems to lose his sanity from then on.
