Product details
The present Part III of the book series 'Rome Fights for the Rhine' is an attempt to examine the historical events that took place during the subjugation of the Germanic tribal confederations on the left bank of the Lower and Middle Rhine, following the accounts of the wars against the Helvetii and Suebi in Part I and against the Belgae in Part II. The entire event is generally known and recognized under the term 'Gallic War.' The author critically illuminates these processes and attempts to present the Roman campaigns from a tribal historical perspective. Everything we know about this war and the tribes involved comes from the writings of Caesar, who was both a general and an author. Although the history known today about this war is presented as a coherent and logical narrative, a closer examination raises many doubts. Each individual volume of this book series is dedicated to a tribal confederation. While Caesar wrote his account as a sequence of campaigns, the representations in the three books aim to coherently trace the military history of the Belgian and Germanic tribes, critically illuminate, and evaluate it. By taking a stance for the affected peoples, the actions of Caesar, driven by divine and political motives, are intended to give greater significance to their desperate struggle for freedom and independence. As far as the book 'De Bello Gallico' allows, the motives behind the actions of the attacked tribes and the political and military capabilities of their leaders are particularly highlighted.
