Herbert Kull is in his mid-fifties and unremarkable. An accountant at a private bank in Zurich, he wears the same outfit every day: a beige suit, a pressed shirt with a tie, and impeccably polished shoes. Both at work and in his daily life, he loves order and rituals. He has no ambitions for a career or for interpersonal relationships. The only person he mourns is his deceased mother, with whom he associates the scent of lavender and loving memories of his childhood. When his sisters urge him to work through their shared childhood, his compulsions intensify, and frightening dreams begin to haunt him. The young assistant Simone Allemann works next door to Herbert Kull. She is not interested in the elderly accountant with his peculiar habits, as she is fully occupied with her emotional life.
