Drall dreams of Ella, Ella dreams of Drall, and neither of them trusts the other. The notion that nothing is as it seems serves as a credo in Mark Kanak's prose book "Lügendetektor," which is formatted in two columns: the man's perspective on the left in German, and on the right in English, though often adjusted by Ella. However, this impression also proves questionable: both text tracks could just as easily be running in the mind of a single person. In a satirical exaggeration, Drall's omissions and excesses present a thoroughly sexualized Münchhausen, and equally consistently, Mark Kanak absurdly challenges various dictates of gendered language use. The discourse on monogamy and infidelity serves the author as a framework for expanding a cultural and technological historical text and image collage on polygraphs and truth drugs, as well as their forensic, intelligence, or private applications. "Lügendetektor" offers a cheerfully disturbing panorama of true and fictional facts about mentiology (the study of lies) and launches a furious attack on the hypocrisy of a system that distributes the license to deceive and disguise differently from top to bottom.
