It is believed that esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) gradually develops through the formation of reflux disease and Barrett's esophagus. The aim of the study was to investigate at which transitional stage on the path to carcinoma known risk factors exert their greatest influence. Overall, the study shows that some risk factors primarily influence the development of early stages of reflux disease, while others mainly promote the development of advanced stages. The results of the study may help identify patients at the highest risk for progression to the next transitional stage.
