Not far from each other, the Rhône and Aare rivers spring forth amidst the Swiss Alps. A breathtaking mountain backdrop has long been a defining element—whether you follow the Rhône to Lake Geneva or the Aare into the Bernese Oberland. In both places, good wine is appreciated, as you can experience in Visp along the Rhône, in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lavaux vineyards high above Lake Geneva, or in Aargau. Cultural highlights are also plentiful: Sierre, Sion, and Martigny along the Rhône offer insights into the history of Valais through their museums, while the mountain towns of Interlaken and Thun along the Aare impress not only with the panorama of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The Aare region is cosmopolitan and sophisticated, featuring the Swiss capital Bern with its UNESCO-protected old town. You can also experience an international flair in the Olympic city of Lausanne and in the scientific city of Geneva by the same lake. While your journey along the Rhône in Geneva doesn't have to end just yet, you must bid farewell to the Aare at Koblenz, where it is "swallowed" by the Rhine.
