The UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley can also be explored by bicycle. The bike path runs alongside the Rhine, which has carved a valley through the Rhine Slate Mountains. Passing by vineyards, over 40 castles, and the famous Lorelei rock, you will reach the noteworthy city of Koblenz. The Lower Middle Rhine Valley north of Koblenz also offers several cultural and scenic highlights. From the former federal capital Bonn, the Rhine Valley then expands into the Cologne Bay, with the Middle Rhine transitioning into the Lower Rhine. Between Cologne Cathedral and the Duisburg blast furnaces, you can expect a varied stage filled with culture, industry, and surprisingly much nature. A highlight of the final section is the state capital Düsseldorf, known for its numerous cultural institutions and its old town, famously referred to as "the longest bar in the world.".
