Children of parents with mental health issues or substance abuse problems are at an increased risk of being abused or neglected. The resources that act as protective factors are often weakly developed in the affected parents. To strengthen the resources of parents that reduce the risk of abuse for children, a modular group program has been developed and evaluated. It focuses on enhancing the stress and coping management of parents. The goal is to achieve better protection for the children. The manual first provides an overview of various forms of abuse and neglect and discusses empirical findings regarding the risk and protective factors in the development of neglect and child abuse. It then provides a detailed description of the implementation of the four modules of the group program.
