Res gestae Saxonicae / Die Sachsengeschichte

In the 10th century, the great era of the Carolingian kings was over. Now the Saxon Ottonians ruled the East Frankish Empire and rose to supremacy in Europe. Their history had to be written to legitimise the new rulers. And so the monk Widukind von Corvey collected historical and legendary material. From facts and myths, from anecdotes and invented speeches, he formed his History of the Saxons. Its value as a source cannot be overestimated for the long history of the origins of the German Empire.
