Product details
For the 4th edition of the DuMont Travel Guide, author Roland Dusik was once again intensively on-site. As a continent of 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a land of superlatives and extremes. This applies not only to the diverse landscapes but also to society, economy, and politics—Indonesia, a country caught between tradition and modernity, between the Stone Age and the Oil Age.
From the bustling metropolis of Jakarta to the Dani tribes in West Papua's Baliem Valley, from the dream beaches of Bali and the coral-rich diving paradises in Wakatobi Marine Park to the orangutan reserves in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra and Kalimantan, all noteworthy regions and cities are described. Each chapter features a double page titled "At a Glance," highlighting the main attractions, the most beautiful routes, active nature experiences, and special tips from the author. Roland Dusik has compiled selected accommodations, restaurants, and shopping addresses for each location, marked on city maps. Hikes reveal the most beautiful landscapes, such as the stunning rice field scenery of Central Bali or the high valley of Tanah Toraja in South Sulawesi. A wealth of information about Indonesia, its history and present, or the daily lives of its people can be found in the introductory country overview as well as in the interspersed thematic pages.
For quick orientation, there is a detailed extra travel map showing all islands at a scale of 1:275,000 (Bali) and 1:7,000,000 (all of Indonesia), an overview map with highlights, and 49 city maps, hiking, and route maps.
For each region, "At a Glance" presents the highlights, the most beautiful routes, active nature experiences, and special tips from the author. Selected addresses are rated with keywords and comments, including price information. City maps provide precise entries for all addresses, along with a separate extra travel map closely linked to the text.
