Wealth without effort: Is Switzerland facing a neo-feudalism? The distribution of wealth has reached a level that resembles the conditions of feudalism in the Ancien Régime. The gap is widening not only between the rich and the poor but also between the middle class and the wealthiest. This is evidenced by a study conducted by a former head of cantonal statistics, based on newly published calculations from the tax statistics of the Canton of Zurich, which are also significant for the entire country. In the Canton of Zurich, the three richest taxpayers hold as much wealth as 412,000 taxpayers, which is more than half of all taxpayers. The richest 10 taxpayers possess the same amount as two-thirds of all taxpayers. The study also indicates that in the coming years, vast fortunes will be inherited by the next generation.
