Regieren an der Peripherie

Limited statehood is a constant in the history of Latin America from the colonial period to the present. Particularly in the culturally heterogeneous border regions, external and internal governance deficits shaped the governing methods of colonial empires and later republics, making the search for alternatives to sovereign control through hierarchical structures necessary. The contributions gathered in this volume examine specific problems and possibilities of governance in the Latin American periphery through case studies, covering a period that ranges from pre-Columbian times to the first half of the 20th century.
