William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered one of the greatest poets and playwrights in world history. He wrote numerous dramas, tragedies, comedies, and poems, earning recognition and prosperity during his lifetime. However, it was only in the following centuries that he became the prototype of literary genius, without whom the development of modern literature from Goethe through Brecht to the present day would be unthinkable.
