In a hotel on the Côte d'Azur, Maxim de Winter meets a young woman from humble beginnings. The two fall in love, and shortly after, she accepts his marriage proposal and follows the widower to Cornwall to his magnificent estate, Manderley. Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier's most famous novel, was already a bestseller upon its release in 1938. It has been adapted into film multiple times, with the most well-known adaptation directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940, which won two Oscars.
