Why do we sometimes react with sadness when nothing special has actually happened? Why do certain small things make us incredibly angry, even though we usually tend to want to please everyone? Such questions occupy many people. Sometimes we feel competent and self-assured, sometimes anxious, and sometimes we just lose our temper. Most of the time, we can manage these feelings relatively well. But what happens when these states suddenly become very intense, without us understanding why, when we don't know how to influence them, or when they don't fit the situation we are in?

The new edition of this guide provides information about typical inner states, known as "schema modes," that strongly influence our experiences, feelings, and actions. The guide refers to schema therapy, a recent development in psychotherapy.

First, the central concepts of schema therapy are explained. Using illustrative case examples, typical inner states ("schema modes") that cause difficulties for many people are illustrated. Building on this, it shows how such schema modes develop, how to recognize them, and what activates them or when they typically occur. The guide presents a variety of practical exercises and strategies that can help change, reduce, or better manage one's problematic schema modes. Additionally, it explains what one can actively do to experience helpful schema modes more frequently.
