Peter May was born and raised in Scotland. By the age of twenty-one, he was an award-winning journalist, and by twenty-six, he was a published novelist. When his first book was adapted into a major drama series for the BBC, he left journalism and became one of Scotland's most successful television dramatists over the next fifteen exciting years. He created three primetime drama series, served as a script editor and producer for two of the highest-rated series in his homeland, and worked on over 1,000 episodes of hit dramas before deciding to leave television to return to his first love, writing novels.

He has won several literary awards in France, received the Barry Award in the USA for The Blackhouse, the first book in his internationally successful Lewis Trilogy, and was awarded the ITV Specsavers Crime Thriller Award in 2014.
