Quality assurance and quality management have evolved in recent years into an exciting yet critically discussed new area of responsibility in medical care. In primary care settings, doctors are confronted with the somatic, psychological, and social aspects of illness, as well as comprehensive care responsibilities for their patients. Therefore, a continuous forum for general practitioners seems necessary to initiate quality improvements and the development of practice-relevant guidelines through collegial exchange. Quality circles have proven to be a suitable working method for self-responsible quality management.
