In many building projects, historic plaster and stucco finishes are removed and replaced with new materials. The reason for this is often uncertainty in dealing with the old building materials. This book shows that there is another way: the authors provide an insight into the historical development of plaster and stucco. They explain the binders used for mortar production - clay, lime, gypsum and cement - and their processing techniques. They use examples to explain conservation work on façade plasters, stucco ceilings and substructures.
This knowledge and the checklists recommended in the book for describing the as-built condition help to assess whether simple repairs by craftsmen are sufficient for a conservation measure. In the case of more complex tasks, they make it possible to find practicable solutions together with specialists in restoration, monument conservation and natural sciences.
